In the baby room the themes throughout December are going to be based around Christmas. The children will be preparing for Christmas by making and painting Christmas trees and presents for their display, making Christmas cards and learning lots of new Christmas songs and carols. The babies are going to explore glitter, play with fake snow and the winter animals and will enjoy playing with tinsel and looking at the bright colours and exploring its texture.
In the toddler room the children are going to enjoy looking at Christmas and taking part in lots of Christmas activities but they will also be looking at another celebration that takes place in December, the Jewish Celebration of Light called Hannukah. The children will be told the story of Hannukah and will have the chance to make their own Hannukah celebration cards. They will also be looking at the ‘Star of David’ and be able to make and decorate their own star using lots of different creative resources. A very popular game during Hannukah is ‘spin the dreidel’. The children will be making their own dreidels and will enjoy playing the game with their friends.
To celebrate Christmas the children will be decorating their room with lots of decorations that they will be making. They will make their own paper snowflakes and will enjoy exploring the different colours and texture of tinsel. They will have lots of fake snow in their water tray with different objects hidden in it that they will need to find. We will be singing lots of Christmas songs and carols and the children will enjoy listening to Christmas stories. The children will be able to design and decorate their own Christmas cards that they will be able to take home and share with their friends and family. We will be enjoying a cooking activity by making and icing Christmas buns incorporating maths by counting and measuring.
The children in pre-school are very excited about preparing for Christmas. They will be producing Christmas displays in their room to make the room very festive by taking part in lots of creative activities. They will be making colourful decorations to decorate their Christmas tree which will incorporate mathematics by using different shapes, and we will be wrapping boxes to make presents for underneath their Christmas tree. The children will be using salt dough to make decorations using Christmas cutters which can then be dried and painted. The children will be able to make their own Christmas stocking which will be hung around the room whilst we wait for Santa to visit! We will be talking about the story of Christmas and will be reading lots of Christmas stories including ‘Christmas with Rita and Whatsit’ and ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’. The children will enjoy learning lots of new Christmas songs and carols including some that they have been learning in their Jiggle and Jam sessions including ‘When Santa Came up the Chimney’.
The children will also be learning about the Jewish celebration of Light, called Hannukah, which takes place in December, and the reasons why we celebrate it. They will be making their own ‘Star of David’ and will be making candles to go in their Menorah.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
